And the winner of last night’s debate on FORA.tv, Does Science Refute God?, was (drum roll please) Lawrence Krauss, an internationally known theoretical physicist and author of A Universe From Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing, and Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, who argued in favor of science.
The debate itself was narrowly focused. Panelist weren’t arguing whether science disproved the existence of God, but rather if it proves that our notions of the Supreme Being are erroneous or wrong.
Krauss and Shermer were at their strongest when they focused on human’s ever-changing religious beliefs. A species who believed at one time there was a god of fire and wind, not to mention Zeus and Posideon, is likely wrong in its current monotheistic faith. In addition, science, over the centuries, has fully explained what was once thought to be miraculous: solar eclipses, hurricanes, etc. In the future, the miracles of today will also be understood through natural laws, not faith.

On the other side of the debate, Ian Hutchinson, professor of nuclear science and engineering at MIT, whose book Monopolizing Knowledge, explores the errors of science, and Dinesh D’Souza, author of What’s So Great About Christianity, did their best to argue that science is very narrow in its focus and will never be able to fully explain the fundamental aspects of life and death.
